The College of Science and Mathematics’ (CSM) PhD Biology student from the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS), Hensly Joy P. Labonete has brought honor to the University by winning the prestigious Best Presenter Award at the 2nd International Conference in Multicultural Education and Interdisciplinary Studies (ICMEIS) 2025, organized by the Philippine Normal University-Mindanao (PNU-Mindanao), held from April 23 to 25 at Almont Inland Resort, Butuan City.

Labonete, along with co-researchers Dr. Mark Anthony J. Torres, Dr. Orven E. Llantos, and Dr. Cesar G. Demayo, presented their groundbreaking study titled Economic Impact and Management Challenges of Fall Armyworm (FAW) Infestation in Corn Farming Communities of Iligan City, Northern Mindanao.

The research shed light on the devastating effects of fall armyworm infestations on smallholder corn farmers, highlighting a staggering 48.76% yield loss and a 50.93% reduction in farmers' income due to the pest's destruction.

The study emphasized the urgent need for sustainable pest management strategies, particularly community-based programs and the integration of local knowledge to mitigate the growing threat of fall armyworm in Philippine agriculture. Labonete’s insightful presentation and deep understanding of the agricultural crisis earned her the Best Presenter recognition among a highly competitive field of international participants.

The ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT community celebrates this milestone, viewing it as a testament to the university’s commitment to research excellence and its dedication to addressing pressing local and global challenges in agriculture and food security.
